Biochemist

I have conducted pioneering work based on Chemistry and Crystallography. I first became interested in Chemistry and crystals as a child and went on to study at Oxford and then gained my PhD from Cambridge. Over 30 years of my career, I researched the structure of proteins – discovering the three dimensional structures of insulin, penicillin and vitamin B12. In 1964, I was awarded a Nobel Prize for my work and Google have even made me my own “doodle” for what would have been my 104th birthday.

Dorothy Hodgkin remains the only British woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Science.
